Why help?
On September 13, 2008 Hurricane Ike devastated much of the Texas coast. Liberty County was no exception. The county has 75,000 residents, out of these 14,000 applied for FEMA aid and another 5,000 to 10,000 should have applied. Most of these residents have managed to recover in one way or another. A substantial population still exists that needs help to recover. These elderly, disabled, uninsured, and disadvantaged residents may have received some help; however, they have not managed to recover completely. Making a full recovery possible for these residents is the purpose of the LCLTRC.
At the LCLTRC we initially began our efforts with 165 elderly, disabled, and single parent households who had been overlooked by other recovery efforts. These people are on fixed incomes and have been unable to get the help they need so their homes have continued to deteriorate. After working to secure funding and build our capacity we have repaired 69 of these homes. Between limited funds and grant stipulations there are often cases where we cannot complete an entire repair with our own resources. That is why we so desperately need volunteers to help in our community. By volunteering in Liberty County not only are you helping to repair homes, you are rebuilding people's lives.
